The Story Behind the Konnector Digital Marketing Consultancy

My Uncle was my childhood hero. He was a career cop that lived and breathed the job because he loved helping people and doing the right thing.

That was back in the day when being a Police Officer was a vocation not just a job.

I followed in his footsteps and started my career as a Police Officer in Sth Auckland. Like many others, I realised that being in the Police was more about cleaning up the mess than it was about changing lives and making a difference.

After 7yrs I left the Police. Disillusioned, broken and cynical. I hated feeling that all I did was in vain and that the bad guys would continue to get away with ripping people off.

Over the next ten years I forged a very successful corporate career in sales and marketing. I ended up as a “turnaround specialist”, taking underperforming companies and transforming them for an Australian private equity firm & preparing them for sale. It was during this time I found my true passion for Digital Marketing and the incredible impact it could have on business performance.

In 2011 I took on the role the Director of Sales for a new division of a Digital Agency in Auckland. We became one of the fastest growing tech businesses in NZ. In under 4 years we grew that SME division from nothing to over $5mill in revenue and a team of 25 sales people and were bought by our American tech partners.

We hired another 100 people in 12 months and created a process driven system to manage clients across Australia and NZ from a central call centre. I should have been happy with my new role in the global giant. I was earning 5 times more than what I was as a cop in a corporate role with lots of travel and perks. I was, however, miserable….

History was repeating itself. Just like in the Police I was tired, disillusioned and frustrated that I was no longer making a positive difference. Even worse, I was now part of the problem.

Something had to change and it was me!

I quit my cushy job and changed my focus. I no longer wanted to “Build an Empire” and focused on how I could make a difference.

I started doing pro-bono work and asking those business owners to share their fears, challenges, frustrations and needs in return.

The overwhelming response was that of frustration, skepticism and anger at being mislead, under communicated to and being kept in the dark by digital marketers they had dealt with in the past.

Konnector was born from this frustration. You, as a business owner, deserve clarity on your digital marketing, honesty in communication and relationships with marketers that care about your business performance not just their revenue numbers or awards.

What was repeatedly asked for was change and another way of doing things:

  • The need for an independent service that could connect businesses with Ethical Digital Marketers.

Over the years I have worked in this industry I have forged some fantastic relationships with some of the best in the business. People that are absolutely passionate about what they do and making a fundamental difference in their clients businesses.

Most of them either work for massive full service agencies that very few businesses can afford or, they have set up their own small passionate business that most of you would never have heard of and they rarely actively promote themselves. Many of these passionate practitioners used to work for those big full service agencies but ere drawn to building their own businesses (like many of us). While they are great at promoting their clients businesses, sales is not something they enjoy so they tend to have a small (but very happy) client base.
